ABOUT
Rod Adams has been fascinated with energy production systems since he was a young teenager when he realized that the Arab Oil Embargo was a threat to his future driving enjoyment. In addition to that external influence, his father was an electrical engineer who thought that substations were cool enough to use as backgrounds for family vacation pictures
Rod graduated with distinction from the US Naval Academy in 1981 with a BS in English. Despite his liberal arts degree, Admiral Rickover accepted him into nuclear power training. He served a junior officer on board USS Stonewall Jackson and as Engineer Officer on board USS Von Steuben. He also earned an MS in Systems Technology (Command, Control and Communications) from the Naval Postgraduate School.
His energy interest areas have included large storage batteries, hydrogen generators, diesel engines, gas turbines, wind propulsion, solar thermal and nuclear fission. He left active duty, joined the Naval Reserves and founded Adams Atomic Engines, Inc. in 1993 to design and market nuclear powered gas turbines. The company published its first web site in 1995 with the help of Dr. Sama Bilbao y Leon and has maintained a presence on the Internet ever since.
Rod was recalled to active duty in 1999 and currently serving on the staff of the Chief of Naval Personnel as a training program requirements officer. He has recently served as an instructor in systems engineering at the US Naval Academy and on the staff of the Secretary of the Navy, specializing in enterprise information systems.
Adams Atomic Engines, Inc. continues its development and web-based marketing efforts. The company’s publications include Atomic Insights, the Atomic Insights Blog and The Atomic Show, hosted by The Podcast Network.
His outdoor hobbies include swimming, bicycling, running, paddling (kayaks and canoes), sailing, hiking and windsurfing. He has been married more than 25 years and has two adult daughters.
